THREAD: So, this Phil Collins renaissance has overjoyed me. Not because I am currently a big fan, but because it's clear all the criticism he's gotten through his life has stung him. /1
When Collins unofficially “retired” a decade ago, he *apologized* for his career. “I’m sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn’t mean it to happen like that. It’s hardly surprising that people grew to hate me,” he said. /2
"In my defense, I only wrote the songs once," he said once. /3
Noel Gallagher famously ripped him, saying, “You don’t have to be great to be successful. Look at Phil Collins.” /4
I’ve always thought it was so sad that someone so accomplished (seven Grammys!) had so much remorse over their career. Like, if PHIL COLLINS can’t be happy, who can? /5
And look, not all music is for everyone. But people at different points in their lives like different things. When I was 13, I loved Phil Collins – “No Jacket Required” was the first tape I ever bought. People can’t tell me my enjoyment wasn’t real or valid. /5
So be proud, Phil Collins – you have nothing to apologize for. You have made a lot of people happy and continue to do so today. May we all be able to say the same thing. /end
