work just rolled out the official rules about "location-based compensation" and i am just having all sorts of feels about the ways this reinforces structural oppression, especially when coupled with an explicit push to slow/stop hiring in expensive markets (SF/NYC/SEA)
like, the upshot of all of this is that my cishet white dude coworkers are going to game the system by finding the cheapest suburbs they can move to that are still within the radius that puts them in a higher-tier city for comp purposes, bc their privilege lets them
my Black coworkers living in mid-size Southern cities for community and family will be paid less bc those cities have cheaper "cost of labor", as though that weren't *directly caused* by historical economic oppression
and if I were to apply for my current job today, I might well not get it because we've slashed engineering hiring in SF and I'd have the choice of relocating to Denver or taking Denver-level pay while staying in SF to have my queer community
so honestly for this to happen in 2020 while execs talk a lot about diversity, inclusivity, and equity, and the company just launched a new top-level priority around racial justice,,,
we see you
we see you
oh lmao we just started the R&D all hands meeting segment on a new vision for where all of our products could go and the introductory anecdote was "i just had a really terrible customer experience while getting ready to buy a house in the 'burbs to save money!"
in a backchannel, on the compensation policies:
"do we know what 'Bay Area' means for comp purposes?"
> "the radius of the furthest director from the [SF] office"
"do we know what 'Bay Area' means for comp purposes?"
> "the radius of the furthest director from the [SF] office"
