Just a few things about this “rare” heart condition that SI posted about in which players are at risk of developing:
1. The condition is myocarditis. It’s actually not really rare in general. Symptoms can be completely mild to very severe symptoms (more rare)
2. Diagnosis is most often made with cardiac MR. here’s the thing, where Im training , we have been referred MANY athletes for routine cardiac MR to rule out myocarditis in either Covid+ athletes or those with suspicious symptoms
3. Anybody who has a myocarditis diagnosis will have to sit out for the season (cardiology organizations say 6 months without sports / strenuous activity
4. Unless patients have signs and other findings consistent with myocarditis, they don’t get routine cardiac MR. The insurance won’t pay for it even if you have amazing insurance.
5. But yet athletes are getting ROUTINE cardiac MRs. which increases surveillance and allows for early prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment
7. Do people think athletes in their community would get routine cardiac mri for myocarditis rule out if they weren’t prepping for season or training ? Absolutely not. So wouldn’t it be more harmful if there wasn’t a season??
Also, why are we then having class on campus ? Non scholarship / varsity athletes are just as likely to get it. What if a “regular student” has myocarditis and doesn’t know due to lack of testing? And they continue going to gym or playing sports with buddies ???
