the appropriation of hawaiian and polynesian culture in k-pop and why it’s not okay thread:
part 2:
𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱. none of these artists deserve hate/cancelling. what they need to do is become educated on hawaiian cultural appropriation as much as their companies do. it’s an ongoing issue in the k-pop industry and south korea.
many have a romanticized idea of hawai’i. they think of going there for vacations. when they think of hula, they see an oversexualized girl in a grass skirt, swaying her hips and waving her arms like the ocean. this is a common misconception and it’s harmful to hawaiian culture.
