For Scripps, #SharkWeek is an opportunity to shed some light on the misunderstood predators that keep our oceans healthy. Follow along this week as we spotlight some of our #shark scientists and the fascinating species they study. 🩈 (Video of tope sharks by Trystan Snodgrass)
Tope sharks are one of the species being studied by Scripps scientists. These sharks are found in temperate oceans worldwide, growing to about 6 ft. They’re a popular sight off #SanDiego, including the #LaJolla MPA, where pregnant females congregate in the shallows. #SharkWeek
What does the life of a shark scientist look like? Follow along today as we take a closer look at a (pre-COVID) shark tagging trip off #LaJolla led by Scripps / @uofsandiego marine biologist @AndrewNosal and two USD students. 🌊 #SharkWeek #SharkWeek2020
. @AndrewNosal is a @UCSanDiego alum & expert on the coastal sharks of Southern California. He was joined by USD students @AnnabelGong & Nikola Modric on this tagging expedition, which focused on tope sharks off #LaJolla (where they have a permit to conduct research). #SharkWeek
Once a shark is on the line, the team carefully brings it to the boat to tag it and measure it. Tope sharks are migratory, so the tags will help scientists study their movements and migration patterns in the waters off Southern California. 🩈 #SharkWeek
