Gentle reminder to writers that the American or English formats are NOT law. Ur story/script can spiral however way you want as long as it makes sense & you figure out how to wrap it up at the end . You don’t HAVE to follow a specific structure just lean on it if ur feeling lost.
Miyazaki , one of if not THE best storytellers of our time, literally makes his stories up as he goes.. while he’s literally boarding and animating . fkn go wild who gives a shit
we waste too much time trying to simplify a story in our heads to fit into this western structure because we’re told it’s the only professional way to present it and i don’t think I agree with that.
Idk if non-native English speaking writers will agree with me here or even just kids that grew up on anime/Japanese style stories but i think the stories we grow up with either don’t have a structure to begin with or don’t have one that follows your basic western outline.
maybe to the west that seems bad at first but it actually works for stories ( atleast here ) because they’re almost always CHARACTER DRIVEN and this makes a big difference in not having to rely on western screenwriting 101 laws because your character BUILDS THEIR OWN STORY
1001 nights literally every story was built & moved by the characters. all the ghibli movies, I think all anime heck even some of the new western stuff like Steven universe says fck u to the cliche structure . If ur a writer yes learn it but you don’t have to be loyal to it.
rule one of writing : there r no rules
just resources to lean to when you need it but other than that just explore your own story structures.
