I’m still going to post this anyway so here we go:

***this is going to be an overly simplified thread free of mechanical jargons so non-car enthusiasts can understand https://twitter.com/ebenkb_/status/1292844439610765312
A transmission is what transmits power from the engine to the wheels. That’s why it’s called a “transmission”. It’s one of the most important parts of your car because if it wasn’t there the engine would be running but the car won’t be able to go anywhere
Right now there are a few different types of transmissions but for the purpose of this thread I’ll stick to just the automatic and manual transmissions.
Most (if not all) automatic transmissions are controlled by a little computer called a transmission control unit (TCU) and a torque converter instead of a clutch. This TCU shifts the gears for you based on preset shift points by the manufacturer
Manual transmissions are controlled by the driver, by depressing the clutch and selecting the gear they want. This is controlled by a bunch of gears and shafts in the gearbox that move around and lock in place when a gear is selected.
The truth of the matter is there is no driver that can shift better than any modern automatic, and that’s why most new supercars, sports cars and other performance cars only come with automatics now. The driver simply can’t shift fast enough to put the power down efficiently
Modern manuals also come these days with fancy stuff like automatic rev-matching, throttle blipping, etc so a lot of manuals these days aren’t fully manual in that sense
Sorry but driving a manual car doesn’t mean you’re a better driver, it just means you know how to drive a manual. Some people want a more engaging driving experience, and that’s fine (I’m one of them) but it doesn’t mean you’re a better driver 😂
So at the end of the day a manual is fine if thats your preference, autos arent bad if you want a “stress-free” driving experience.
Just remember that driving a manual doesnt automatically make you a better driver, 85% of you saying that dont even know how to heel-toe rev match anyway 😂
Also, manual transmissions are generally cheaper to replace and maintain so yeah
