My first 1000 Twitter Followers: 9 'Odd' Lessons I learned.

I Hit 1000 followers in 47 days.
We have all heard the usual growth advice...
...but here are 9 things that surprised me.

#1
Growth is often directly proportional to activity.
Look how many tweets some of the fast-growing accounts like @oliviercantin have.
Most of those are comments.
If your growth is slow, but you only have 1000 Tweets?
Get busy.

As you grow?
The tweets on your own timeline can have more effect than comments.
My recent growth has been dominated by some of my own tweets going 'mini-viral'
I did not expect this until I was much larger.

Growth comes in spurts, and it can be hard to figure out why.
I get 20 followers a day on average.
But...
One day I lost one.
One day I got 5.
Yesterday I got 70.
Don't let the ups and downs get to you - we all have them.

Friends and connections are EXTREMELY important.
Your reach is the sum of the people in your network.
People don't include you in 'Follow Friday' suggestions if they don't like you.

Don't neglect short, one-liners and two liners.
They can do really well, and tend to get a lot of retweets.

Big accounts are surprisingly friendly and approachable.
Don't be afraid to reach out.
Especially if you bought their product.

When you engage with people you have not heard from in a while, they start showing up on your timeline again.
How could you use this to your advantage?

Retweets from larger accounts don't help as much as I thought they would.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

People love to talk about themselves - give them an excuse to and your tweet will do well.
(I learned this from @askthegiver, he knows more about Twitter growth than anybody I know.)

Tweeting 10-30 times daily is making me smarter.
I respond faster to work emails, and am becoming more eloquent in my everyday speech.

About 1 in 10 people who follow me sign up for my email newsletter. I think this can be improved, any suggestions?
P.S. I am going to start doing detailed income breakdowns in my newsletter - sign up through the link in my Bio.
