🌸】— Why i don’t want you to tag me in “activist tweets,” a thread ✨
let me start with defining performative activism.

Performative Activism (as defined by Wikipedia) — Performative activism is a pejorative term referring to activism done to increase one's social capital rather than because of one's devotion to a cause. It is often associated ++
++ with surface-level activism, referred to as slacktivism.”

great! now that we know WHAT we’re doing, we need to know WHY it’s bad and what you can do to help. So, why is this harmful?
Performative Activism is harmful because you promote and say you will / have done things to help out on an issue, when you really havent. You put on a “show,” showing you’re an activist and “i really do care!” but you do NOTHING to help.

Now, what CAN you do to help?
first of all, you can start by looking at this carrd (+ others below!) and sign the petitions, text/call these numbers, donate/vote (if you can). there’s so much you can do to ACTUALLY help. https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/
because what’s tagging an anitwt/any twt user in a “justice for XXX” tweet gonna do for XXX? absolutely nothing. you are not spending the time it took to copy-and-paste and tag 5-6 other people to start a chain to ACTUALLY help get justice for them. this is performative activism.
spend the time you’re taking to tweet out that “i want justice for XXX” and tagging 6 of your friends to start a chain for attention to DO SOMETHING. it took me almost 6 minutes to find all of these links, as well as sign about 3-4 petitions. https://currentintissues.carrd.co/
if you refuse to do this yet you STILL tweet ”justice for Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, etc.” you are part of the problem. Do better and actually fucking help. https://blackliveswillalwaysmatter.carrd.co/
this tweet was to initially talk about the “justice for Breonna Taylor” tweet i’ve been tagged in about three times now, but i also want to bring attention to these issues as well because Performative Activism extends wayyyy past BLM. https://yemencrisis.carrd.co/
