With the college football season currently hanging in the balance, I want to offer the alternative of soccer. While it may not replace the Saturday void, there are similarities between European leagues and college conferences that can tide the average fan over until next year:
ACC = La Liga (Spain)
Lesser teams will throw everything but the kitchen sink into their game plan but Real Madrid/Barcelona will ultimately triumph. They possess Clemson-esque concentration, using the games as preparation for a Champions League matchup months in advance.
Big 10 = Bundesliga (Germany)
Tough, defensive, fundamental football. Unless it's a Bayern Munich creating scorelines as unbalanced as an Ohio St.- Rutgers game. Games start at 8:30 am, so your morning beer consumption will be on par with the average Purdue-Penn St. tailgate.
Big 12= Serie A (Italy)
Juventus makes Oklahoma's sustained run of success look relatively recent. AC Milan's accumulation of talent always puts them on the verge of resurgence. But alas, it's usually nothing more than pre-season hype.
Pac-12 = Ligue 1 (France)
PSG's frustrating inability to parley domestic success into even a Champions League semifinal should be a familiar refrain for Pac-12 fans. Also, you're likely watching these games to view a promising prospect before he joins the "big leagues."
SEC = Premier League (England)
Contenders perform at such an elite level that their matchups are nothing short of titanic clashes. Even the rivalry games of second-tier traditional powers are overwhelming displays of pageantry and historic passions.
