I read this and I'm in the "counting pills" group and even though we get shamed daily for taking a lunch we do more ....c'mon #rxtwitter #pharmtwitter tell me what you do besides count pills. Here is my story:
I'm a manager of the rx dept last year:
Sold: >300,000 rxs/12 mos https://twitter.com/mmPharmD/status/1292604348560740360
Vaccinated >3000 ppl/12 mos
Educated and counseled all these ppl
- we have pharmacist access to ANYONE who needs help 24 hours a day - yes you can call and actually speak to a live Pharm.D.
- provide after hours hospice care rxs
- regional rabies vaccination center
- provide after hours nursing home support
- HIV center of excellence
- provide all travel vaccines
- attempted 128,000 adherence calls/12 mos
- MTM tips/CMR
- deemed essential workers from day 1 - we work every day in the community fighting the COVID-19 pandemic
- we support the pain management clinics in our area keeping needed drugs in stock for patients and proactively monitoring the PDMP for responsible use
- we monitor and enroll patients in synchronization programs to keep them taking their meds
- we provide guidance and triage for appropriate patient self care
- we grudgingly apply manufacturer drug coupons and rx discount cards for patients to make the difference between affording a drug and not buying it
- we serve as the last gatekeeper to verify, correct rx
orders before they reach the patient
- we fight the PBMs daily to get ppl their meds (prior auth, drug changes to covered products etc) which is the difference between a person getting needed meds or going home without
- provide 3 day emergency supplies for rxs requiring MD auth
We all do this while being disrespected, shamed (for taking lunch), and in a fast moving stressful environment. This is an example of 1 store, but we have a huge footprint in the community and that's the point... we may be viewed as counters but we truly do much, much more.
