“Therapy should never be used to normalize or acclimate to oppression.”
-our girlfriend

We think about this a lot, in terms of a lot of things.
The solution for trans folks getting misgendered isn’t to put them in therapy so they learn how to deal with the resulting dysphoria, it’s educate society to not misgender them.
The solution for autistic folks’ stimming isn’t putting them through traumatizing therapy and teaching them to constantly mask and suppress natural bodily behaviors, but to teach society to accept them as they are.
The solution for system members feeling upset they can’t express themselves isn’t to put us in therapy to better bear the weight of constantly masking our plurality & pretending to be the host, it’s to create an accepting society, so we can express our plurality authentically.
When we ask “This marginalized community is being oppressed, what should we do to help them?” The immediate answer should not be “Therapy.” Therapy can help the pain sting less but the fundamental healing & change should always be within society as a whole.
Therapy should not be used in place of demanding change within society.

Therapy should not be used to normalize oppression.

Therapy should not be a tool to teach marginalized communities to better bear the weight of oppression instead of fixing the society that harms them.
“There’s no amount of investment in ‘wellness’ that can counteract the constant effects of exclusion from society and medical care. We will heal when we are considered as worthy of a full, safe, and dignified life as everyone else.”
