Let me explain the frustration that musicians feel (a thread): imagine rehearsing for hours, getting stuck in traffic, just to arrive at a gig without an audience. One day you'll get to sneak in some originals in between covers just to get someone to listen-- https://twitter.com/dyancastillejo/status/1292424935374110722
IF you're lucky, someone will like that song and start following you on SoundCloud. Maybe tell their friends about one of your MANY free shows. Wala pang bayad yan, exposure muna. Next level is free beer tapos hopefully free food na rin hahaha
Over time you will learn that the quickest way to get ghosted online is by saying "COME TO MY GIG". After all, P200 with a free drink and 5 performers is a legit good deal, but believe me, MAHIRAP MAGINVITE.
Assume natin you built a fanbase na! Wokey, pwede ka na magSpotify! You fill your mind with the idea that everyone will take you seriously now, and maybe you can start to make good money! Pero deins, now you have to learn more about marketing: PR, playlisting, radio guesting, etc
Just like the beginning, you're still gonna be spending more than you're earning. After all, Spotify only gets you P0.03 centavos per stream. But if you did the work, and more importantly, made GREAT music, the success should follow.
Being a musician is tough. You go through so much years of struggle, writing and rewriting your songs to perfection, spending time and money to have them be heard. Only to find out that after climbing that mountain... some guy can just fly on his private jet to the top
Do I have a problem with Michael Pacquiao? Not at all! Sure his lyrics are lackluster and his production is dated, but we all start somewhere. The frustration lies in a world that allows a name to matter more than the song.
This kind of attention we give just goes to show that one's years of grinding has no match against an amateur rapper's surname. You have no match against someone who rhymes "I don't wanna be with you now way" with "I have respect for who I am"
