Sorry to keep making the same points, but while media headlines continue to dwell on results day, so will I. For offer holders first of all, I'm so sorry. It seems to me that there's lots of attention-grabbing quotes but little information. So here's a thread on help. #cambtweeet
1) Be kind to yourself. Even if this year were normal, which it manifestly isn't, this would be a very stressful period. So do things you enjoy. Don't force yourself to do anything. Don't feel guilty about anything that might help. This is most important.
2) Have a plan. This is harder than normal, but make sure you know what you want. Would you consider reapplying? Retaking exams in September? Going to your insurance? Going through clearing? All great options; if you have a preference beforehand, it'll make the day easier.
This might be complicated, but a couple of things to note – according to latest guidance, you can retake some exams and not others, if you're happy with some results. Furthermore, Cambridge at least have said we'll honour offers for next year if you do decide to resit.
3) Given all the uncertainty, it is worth having an idea of who to contact if something feels wrong. Most universities will publish guidance, but if they don't, there is nothing wrong with calling them to ask.
4) If you feel your results are unreflective of the work you have done, there is *nothing* wrong with querying them. Do not ever feel that in some way you have failed.
(4.5 – results do not define you. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves regardless for the work you did.)
5) Cambridge, at least, have said that we're aware of potential problems with grading systems. Wait for UCAS confirmation! It's possible that you'll be accepted regardless of whether you've missed your offer.
6) It seems to me entirely likely that there will be some sort of scandal regardless. Try not to focus on it. Ultimately, you are the most important person here, and you can only control your own choices. Numbers are treacherous, and also reflect the 750,000 people who take –
A levels. They're not reflective of who you are as an individual. As tempting as it can be, try to avoid applying the big headline figures to yourself.
7) Last of all, remember to be proud of yourselves whatever happens. Year 13 is incredibly hard, this year has been far, far worse. You are not defined by your results; you are still awesome. Choose the plan that makes you happiest.
All the best, and I'm here for any questions!
