how to use trigger warnings correctly: an important thread
what is a trigger warning?

a trigger warning is used when mentioning a potentially harmful word/topic in your tweet.

e.g. tw // word
why are trigger warnings important?

trigger warnings are crucial for helping to keep twitter safe for everyone that uses it. including a trigger warning in your tweets will ensure that it will not end up on the timeline of someone who does not wish to see it.
how do trigger warnings work?

twitter has an option where you are able to mute words that could be potentially harmful to you. in order for trigger warnings to help you, you should mute all words/topics that could trigger you.
how to mute words:

settings>content preferences>muted>muted words>add

you should mute the word itself and also these phrases

tw // word
trigger warning // word
how NOT to use trigger warnings:

tw//word
tw// word
tw//w*rd
tw// w*rd

and any other form of censoring the word. you may think you’re helping by sensoring the word, but you don’t need to because the person won’t be seeing your tweet anyway if they have the word muted.
why is this NOT the correct way to include a trigger warning?

asterisks (*) and spaces will not be registered by twitter as the word itself, and therefore will still show up on the timelines of people who have chosen to mute this word. 1/2
people who are triggered by something will mute a word to keep it off of their timeline. if the word is either censored or directly connected to any other letters or symbols, it will register as a different word, causing the muting system not to work as intended. 2/2
how to use trigger warnings correctly and effectively:

trigger warning // word
tw // word

if you are mentioning multiple topics in your tweet, space out the commas as follows:

trigger warning // word , word etc
tw // word , word etc
it is SO important to use trigger warnings correctly because you never know who is going to see your tweet and how it will effect them. just because something wouldn’t trigger you, it doesn’t mean it won’t trigger someone else.
it is also SO important to mute any words/ topics that are/ could be potentially harmful to you. you have to play your part in all of this otherwise it will not work. remember: you’re responsible for your own triggers and you can’t complain if you haven’t done your part.
you have no idea how many people you will help just by using trigger warnings when talking about potentially sensitive topics. please retweet so this tweet can reach more people.
