why the foxeye trend is such a huge problem: a thread
to start off, what exactly is the foxeye trend? it’s a pose/makeup look that has been trending on various social media platforms. people pull at their temples to create a slanted eye look. this popularized “look” is the same pose that has been to used to mock east-asian features.
for many years, the motion of pulling the eyes has been used to ridicule asians, specifically east-asians. this is one of the many forms of casual racism against asians.
this eye pulling look combined with hateful words circulated around society (school, jobs, public spaces, etc) gave asians the sense that they were the inferior group. this foxeye trend invalidates and sugarcoats the many years of trauma that asians faced growing up.
the following post by @dearasianyouth explains why the foxeye trend should not be encouraged. asians had to change their lifestyle to physically fit in but as soon as western culture appropriates it, the history of our oppression is shunned away.
now to answer the question of this thread, the foxeye trend is so offensive because of the fact that it normalizes a look that asians were once oppressed for. by doing this trend, you are silencing the concerns of asians who feel uncomfortable. we went through so++
much pain and mockery just for western culture to make it “trendy”. it’s racially insensitive and damaging to the east asian community. this trend is deeply rooted in the direct oppression and erasure of east-asians experiences with racism.
another issue branching off of this is how people react when asians come forward and speak on how inappropriate the trend is. many will say “you’re overreacting” or “it’s just a trend”. just because it’s being popularized doesn’t mean that the trend should be followed.
what should you do to support the asian community with this growing trend? the simplest answer is to hear us out. if we as a community say that it’s offensive and invalidating past traumas, listen to us. don’t call us dramatic or sensitive but stand with us and educate others.
i hope you were able to educate yourself by reading this thread. please show support and love to your asian community❤️the foxeye trend is dangerous and is quickly getting normalized. we as a society must come together and fight this appropriation! to all my asians out there++
who were negatively impacted by the foxeye trend, you are so valid and loved! i hope you are able to go on a journey of self-acceptance and eventually be able to embrace your culture💓if you are able to retweet this thread to spread the message, that’d help a lot!
last note: i know i can’t word this thread perfectly but i hope i got the overall message through. please forgive me for any mistakes, i just want the general message to be that the fox eye trend is dangerous and should not be supported!
