5 year old: So, all the roots under the trees connect to every tree. But if a tree is in danger, it talks to a not-in-danger tree, & the not-in-danger tree talks to all the other trees.

Wait, the mystery has been solved! According to the oldest kid, they learned all about the trees from a Magic School Bus episode! Never say television isn’t educational.
