My takeaways from being on campus this weekend:
1. Move-in was pretty smooth in terms of rule-following. There were very few people not wearing masks, and all who were asked to put them on did.
2. After move-in was a completely different story. Tech Square and fraternity row after 6PM were full of groups of students without masks and not social distancing. Restaurants/bars were packed and similarly didn& #39;t have masks/distancing.
3. Elevator limits are not going to happen. No one follows them. I brought this issue up in the Task Force I was on- how can we expect people to follow these new rules if we have no means of enforcement?
4. I watched several high-ranking SGA members walk around Tech Square without masks and not social distancing. It& #39;s not just fraternities/sororities breaking the rules. It& #39;s also the students who are supposed to be helping enforce them.
5. Lawn chairs are awesome. If you& #39;ll be on campus, I HIGHLY encourage you to get one. It makes it easy to spread out in a circle to maintain social distancing and also enjoy the outdoors.
6. If you think you have enough hand sanitizer/cleaning wipes, get an extra one next time you& #39;re at the store if they have any. Those of us volunteering were using TONS.
7. A lot of people who were really good about wearing masks suddenly stopped wearing them when friends came and joined them.
The sad part is, none of this is surprising. #JacketsProtectingJackets is being used by orgs and admin to make it seem like they care, but many of those same people are turning around and either not enforcing rules or breaking the rules themselves.
(adding on as I think of things)
8. Wearing a mask SUCKS. It does. Give yourself a break every once in a while. If you see someone wearing theirs improperly/not wearing one, let them know! There& #39;s a good chance they just didn& #39;t realize/forgot.
9. People didn’t want to talk about COVID or the rules changes. There is a general feeling of discomfort whenever the topics come up.
This is still getting a fair bit of traction so I& #39;m going to add one last thing- If you& #39;ve been on campus, I welcome you to share your experience! Good, bad, anything. If you disagree, that& #39;s totally fine. This is based on what I& #39;ve observed, but you may have seen differently.
