what’s happening in argentina’s paraná delta? a thread to educate my international mutuals.
first of all, as you can see, i’m argentinean and my english isn’t my first language. sorry if i have typos in this thread but i think it’s very important to share with you all.
fires in argentina’s paraná delta are burning out of control. the delta system is an intricate network of islands, streams, lagoons, marshlands, grasdlands and forests, that crisscross the paraná river.
the region goes trough argentina’s entre rios province has a big abundance of wildlife species, including at least, 50 mammals, 260 birds, 200 fish, 37 reptiles and 27 amphibians. as you can see, this region is the home of so many species of our country.
of course, because of the fires there’s a risk of devastation of the ecosystems, exceeding any level of resilience that native species may present. here are pics of animals perished in the flames
this river plays a very important role in regulating water and sequestering carbon. to make it worse, the paraná delta region has experienced lowest water levels in the last months.
the sad part it is that the fires are intentional. it happens every year, mostly on winter so they can “renew” the pastures so they can continue to expand the island farming practice. the goverment doesn’t do anything to stop this. they are ignoring the people from this region.
the “air” that the citizens of this region breathe is basically smoke. it’s extremely unhealthy for them. breathing polluted air and generates respiratory and cardiac harmful effects. here are some pics of all the smoke in the city.
more pics of the smoke. this is in villa constitución, a city of santa fe. this is how they’re living.
while the fires continue to burn, environmentalists are campaigning to establish laws that will help protect wetland ecosystems in argentina, including the region of the paraná delta. the people from this region are asking for a solution: the law of the wetlands.
a wetland is an area of land, usually flat, whose surface is permanently or intermittently flooded. by being regularly covered with water, the soil becomes saturated, being devoid of oxygen and giving rise to a hybrid ecosystem between purely aquatic and terrestrial ones.
the wetlands will help the species, the islands and of course it will minimize all the fires. people are manifestating for this law because they need it. our country need it. we have to take care of our beautiful ecosystem.
