I continue to hear this narrative that we should not support Senator Harris because she was a prosecutor and she was tough on crime. As someone who was raped at the age of 5 and whose sister was murdered at the age of 19; I tend to support prosecutors who put monsters away. 1/20
These people who call Sen Harris, the top cop, never tell the stories of Roberto Gamero, the man who raped a 9 year old and who Sen Harris sent to prison or the story of Charles Rothenberg who set his 6 yr old son on fire and killed him because he was mad at his wife. 2/20
Yes, these are some of the people she put in prison. Senator Harris also started the Back on Track initiative, a first-of-its-kind reentry program for first-time nonviolent offenders. 3/20
The program had requirements such as community service, getting a high-school-equivalency diploma, maintaining employment and attending parenting classes. At graduation, the court would dismiss the case and expunge the graduate's record. 4/20
Over six years, Sen Harris' program had over 200 graduates, and achieved a low recidivism rate of less than 10 percent, compared to 53 percent of California's drug offenders that returned to prison within two years of release. 5/20
Back on Track earned recognition from the U.S. DOJ as a model for reentry programs. The DOJ found that the cost to the taxpayers per participant was markedly lower ($5,000) than the cost of adjudicating a case ($10,000) and housing a low-level offender ($50,000). 6/20
In 2009, a state law (the Back on Track Reentry Act, A.B. 750) was enacted, encouraging other California counties to start similar programs. 7/20
Adopted by the National District Attorneys Association as a model, prosecutor offices in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Atlanta have used Back on Track as a model for their own programs. 8/20
Sen Harris also created a unit to fight environmental crimes. Harris filed charges against the Alameda Publishing Corporation for dumping hazardous printing ink in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood. 9/20
Fifty gallon buckets of hazardous ink were left overturned and leaking: the corporation and its publishers were charged with unlawful disposal and transportation of hazardous waste and with depositing of hazardous substances on a road. 10/20
And what about that truancy program? First of all no parents were ever jailed. Sen Harris led a city-wide effort to protect at-risk elementary school children. 11/20
Many parents whose kids had more than 50 unexcused absences agreed to work with social service agencies to create "parental responsibility plans" to help them start sending their children to school regularly. 12/20
Because of this program ,the number of elementary school students who habitually missed school was down by 23%. So before you tell falsified stories of Senator Harris do your research. And you will find a black woman who has dedicated her life to working for the people. 13/20
