So here is Yulia Latynina’s great article in Novaya Gazeta entitled “Infntile socialism has become the new religion of the Greater West”.

Let me say, straight away, that I agree with almost every word and intend to translate parts of it at some time in
the future. I think, along with articles of Andrey Illarionov on his blog, this represents the most profound analysis of the disease that has affected most (or perhaps all - I am not quite sure) of the “Old West” and is trying to spread to the new one (including Poland) although
I personally doubt it will succeed (I have myself written an article which attempts to explain why, which will appear soon).
Now, this article was so “controversial” for Novaya Gazeta that it felled competed to include a special introduction from the Editors.
This introduction
says that the editors hesitated whether to publish it and finally decided to ask the “accomplices” (I am not quite sure how to translate соучастник without implying some degree of criminality). You can become an “accomplice” of Novaya Gazeta by supporting it financially. In fact
I tried to do it but for some reason my credit card transaction could not be processed. Maybe it’s something to do with Russia sanctions, although I have been able to buy lots of electronic books from Russian online stores using PayPal.
Anyway, Novaya Gazeta asked its
“accomplices” and 91,5% were in favour of publishing and 8,5% against. Novaya Gazeta adds that most of them said they did not agree with Latynina but were in favour of publishing on the principle which is often attributed to Voltaire (but there is not the slightest evidence he
ever wrote it or said it), which the editors state in a particularly strong form: “I don’t agree with one word of what you say, but am ready to die for your right to say it”. (These words seem to originate with Evelyn Beatrice Hall, who translated and edited Voltaire’s letters.
She does not say he ever uttered them, she say only that it was “the principle” which guided Voltaire).
Anyway, a few words are needed about a Novaya Gazeta. It is partly owned by Alexander Lebedev, the former KGB officer and his son Evgeny, who are also owners
of the Independent and the Evening Standard. Evgeny Lebedev was recently given a life peerage by Boris Johnson. Now, this caused all the ”usual suspects” declare that this was another example of the influence of “Russian oligarchs” on Johnson. The only problem with this view is
that all the media owned by the Lebedev’s seem to follow the sand “progressive-liberal” line, and in particular opposed Brexit and are officially critical of Putin.
Another co-owner of Novaya Gazeta is Michael Gorbschov. And the Editor, Muratov, recently confirmed that Sergey
Adonyev ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serguei_Adoniev) also finances Novaya Gazeta. This revelation has induced several Russian anti-Putin intellectuals to declare they they would not publish in the newspaper - Adoniev’s links to the regime are too close for comfort.
Nevertheless there have been
genuine and even heroic independent journalists who worked for Novaya Gazeta, above all the murdered journalists Igor Domnikov Anna Politkovskaya, Stanislav Markelov, Anastasia Baburova, Natalya Estemirova. It has published investigations embarrassing to some figures connected
with the regime such is “Putin’s chef” Yevgeny Prigozhin. Yet, as with all independent Russian media, such as “Ekho Moskvy”, “Moscow Times” etc, there is a feeling that there existence is convenient to the Kremlin and in the main they serve its purposes. This presents a dilemma
for anti-Kremlin Russian intellectuals, especially those who live in emigration (such as Latynina, who moved out of Russia with her parents after her car was blown up, Mark Solonin, Andrei Illarionov, Konstantin von Eggert and others, to whom these Russian media open the chance
to address an audience in Russia).
Anyway, Novaya Gazeta’s readership clearly to be mostly on the liberal-left of Russia’s opposition. It’s however characteristic that even there over 90% of the most devoted readership (assuming that being willing to regularly contribute money
is a measure of devotion) are in favour of the “Voltaire Principle”. This is clearly no longer true in the “Greater West”.
