SDSU is profiting off of students and faculty more than ever before during this pandemic despite claiming budget concerns. Here's a thread exposing Adela de la Torre and SDSU ->
I was contacted by an SDSU sports club exec who has been monitoring SDSU's athletic plans for this upcoming Fall semester. SDSU will be allowing contact sports such as football to continue playing this fall while cancelling almost every non-contact sport including golf and tennis
SDSU's most profitable fall sports are continuing despite putting students' health at risk. SDSU's less profitable fall sports seasons are cancelled due to the risk of the virus. Make it make sense??
Sports isn't the only area of interest. SDSU's tuition and fees costs have INCREASED this year by an extra $42. Housing costs have also increased this year. Students are still paying fees for gym costs and in person events that usually happen on campus during the school year
A lot of fees should be cancelled this year since many students won't be setting foot on campus. Instead, SDSU is essentially pocketing these extra fees
Additionally, President Adela de la Torre has been wanting to make an SDSU world campus program since her inauguration. Her plan was to make all SDSU classes available online in order to double or even triple the amount of students accepted to SDSU
Her plan was to pay professors a one time fee to buy their lecture recordings that the school would then own the rights to. According to a professor, Adela's SDSU world campus plan was essentially a "Grand Canyon University for-profit scheme"
Not only would SDSU degrees risk losing accreditation, Adela was okay with putting students in lifelong student debt for a substandard and possibly outdated education with recycled lecture recordings
This pandemic made SDSU go online before Adela was able to launch SDSU world campus, but all classes going online allowed her to test SDSU's online capabilities without the criticism she would've faced launching SDSU world campus in conjunction with in person classes
Now, Adela is claiming SDSU is facing a $67 million deficit and encouraging professors to retire. If SDSU owns the rights to any lecture recordings, SDSU has no need for lecturers anymore. It seems to me that Adela is already transitioning to her for-profit model
Here's a thread where I expose some of Adela's unnecessary expenditures. Note how most of her new expenses are designed to make her and SDSU look better while not actually contributing any difference to students or faculty https://twitter.com/sharky_marky17/status/1291217565583159296?s=19
I want to point out that slightly modifying SDSU's mission valley plan could easily cover SDSU's budget deficit without essentially forcing professors to retire. It doesn't seem right to me to retire professors early when they're what makes or breaks a university
For instance, the comp sci department at SDSU recently experienced a shortage of professors after a termination. Almost all upper division comp sci classes had long waitlists, comp eng majors we're denied elective courses, and there were concerns of comp sci losing accreditation
On campus research is a pride for SDSU, but not according to Adela's budget cuts. Adela's job is to get SDSU more money, and she's doing that, but in a way that's hurting current students and faculty. Adela is focusing too much on long term plans to appeal to future students
She's focused too much on the big picture while ignoring current students. We want smaller class sizes, more personalized connections with professors, and greater research opportunities. We want to improve our current infrastructure before funding an entirely new campus
This pandemic has brought upon drastic changes in education, and I don't think Adela is making the correct changes. The SDSU community needs to have these conversations and question its leadership now more than ever. The future accreditation of our degrees may rely on it
