[SKK language thoughts]

Dazai uses the pronoun 私 わたし (watashi) to refer to himself.
I think this is super interesting, because males usually use 俺 おれ (ore) or僕 ぼく(boku). In general Japanese, „watashi“ is used in formal conversations. In informal contexts it’s
considered rather feminine.
In anime, tho, it’s often used by male characters, who are like a bit detached or “above” others, in a “bossy” or emotional way (like L from Death Note or Byakuya from Bleach).
Dazai also uses the ending ―かい (-ka) and ―だい- dai in questions (primarily when he addresses his enemies), which is also commonly used by male speakers when they address their subordinates or their wives, to make the question sound softer, which fits his usual habit of smiling
at his enemy while literally taking them apart (he doesn’t use it addressing Fyodor). https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🐁" title="Maus" aria-label="Emoji: Maus">

This could imply how Dazai sees himself as kind of detached from humanity and also his own emotions. “Watashi” also indicates neutrality and makes the recipient ask: “Are you the bad or the
To be blunt – I stan Chuuya! He’s my oxygen. I adore him to the core and I also love how he expresses his personality in the way he expresses himself. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤩" title="Vom Star geblendet" aria-label="Emoji: Vom Star geblendet">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙏🏻" title="Folded hands (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands (heller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="❤" title="Rotes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Rotes Herz">

Chuuya is usually like super casual towards other persons. He’s not impolite (but he isn’t polite either) and that’s how
he also addresses like the ADA members.
The only persons we can hear him talk to super politely is when he talks to Kouyou and of course Mori-san. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😊" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit lächelnden Augen" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit lächelnden Augen">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="✌🏻" title="Siegeshand (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Siegeshand (heller Hautton)">

(Short background info:
You may know that in Japanese the verb endings are one important politeness indicator and the plain form of verbs is used in informal situations instead of the ~masu form.

Ashita ha koroshimasu yo.
Ashita korosu yo.
Both sentences mean “I’ll kill you tomorrow”, but the second one is more informal.

Chuuya is the type of man, who would rather say:

Ashita kurose~~!!!! https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤬" title="Gesicht mit Symbolen über dem Mund" aria-label="Emoji: Gesicht mit Symbolen über dem Mund">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😡" title="Schmollendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Schmollendes Gesicht">)
It made me laugh so hard, when Chuuya swapped his way of talking in front of Mori in the FIFTEEN light novel, when first encountered him keeping trapped by Rimbaud and when entered the Mafia, going on his knees in front of Mori. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Gesicht mit Freudentränen" aria-label="Emoji: Gesicht mit Freudentränen">
What I exceedingly admire at our Chibikko is that he also quite polite towards his subordinates. It’s a way to show respect and care towards them, but also to show off his position as an executive. Chuuya usually uses the pronoun 俺 おれ (ore) instead of 僕 ぼく(boku), since “ore” is a bit more masculine and it carries familiarity as well as a slight touch superiority when a boy/man uses it among peers. Depending on the context “ore” can also sound ruder than “boku”,
which is more humble.

Chuuya addresses Dazai often with お前 (omae), which shouldn’t be used in RL Japan, since it indicates that you think, that “the one in front of you” (the literal translation) is degradingly younger, below your status, experience etc.
Most of the time he addresses his partner with the one NO-NO to be used in RL Japan: 手前 (teme). Japanese doesn’t have that much of swear words, so Chuuya needs to use what he has https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😅" title="Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß" aria-label="Emoji: Lächelndes Gesicht mit offenem Mund und Angstschweiß">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👉🏻" title="Rückhand Zeigefinger nach rechts (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Rückhand Zeigefinger nach rechts (heller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👉🏻" title="Rückhand Zeigefinger nach rechts (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Rückhand Zeigefinger nach rechts (heller Hautton)"> “Teme” is what we would translate as “You bastard”, “You son of a b*!#https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😱" title="Vor Angst schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Vor Angst schreiendes Gesicht">ch”, “as---------“

Talking about swearing: I have this kink–and every time Chuuya adds ―やがれ (-yagare) to his verbs I’m going feral https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😩" title="Mattes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Mattes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙏🏻" title="Folded hands (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands (heller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="❤" title="Rotes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Rotes Herz">
As I’ve mentioned before: Japanese doesn’t have that amount of swear words and Chuuya indeed uses the full possible spectrum!https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤩" title="Vom Star geblendet" aria-label="Emoji: Vom Star geblendet">
“Yagare” is solely used in animes and it often is translated as a swear word due to its level of rudeness. With this Chuuya is able to insult Dazai without even using an actual insult (he could combine it if he’s really pissed).
In this scene he could say:

Hanashite kudasai! (Let me go please!)
Hanashite! (Let me go!)
Hanase!!!! (LET ME GO!)

But he says “Hanashiyagare”, which is like “LET! THE! FUCK! GO! OF! ME! GODDAMIT!”
(Gosh how can they be so in love honestly https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😭" title="Laut schreiendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Laut schreiendes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙏🏻" title="Folded hands (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands (heller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="❤" title="Rotes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Rotes Herz">)

Dazai addresses Chuuya usually either with his name (I love when he says his name https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😌" title="Erleichtertes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Erleichtertes Gesicht">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="✊🏻" title="Erhobene Faust (heller Hautton)" aria-label="Emoji: Erhobene Faust (heller Hautton)">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="♥" title="Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Herz">) or with 君 (kimi). “Kimi” in anime Japanese (it’s not that common IRL as well) as well as “omae” implies a certain level of intimacy when
used. It’s rude if you’re not on an intimate basis with your vis-á-vis. It’s usually also more condescending, but in anime it’s also used in romantic contexts to imply intimacy (like in “Kimi no na ha”). In general it’s always lovely to hear Chuuya’s language getting so slurry whenever Dazai is around bugging him, but Dazai always stays that calm and casual as we know him. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😏" title="Grinsendes Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Grinsendes Gesicht">
