this piece of choreography called the ‘aloha dance’ appropriates hawaiian culture by imitating hula dance moves. it is evident in the arm movements and excessive/over-exaggerated hip swaying. https://twitter.com/doiesblep/status/1291632556022984707
hula tells a story and is the integral unspoken language of hawai’i. hula was used to pass down stories and perform sacred religious rituals. hula is not grass skirts and swaying hips. it’s fierce, powerful, and a lot of work. i’ve danced hula.
