A thread on NYC Public School Reopening & Governor Cuomo Announcement 🧵

I am proud of NYC, we have one of the lowest transmission rates in the country, after being the epicenter.

That being said, I cannot, see my own child going back to school, not even in a blended model.
Today is the deadline for NYC public school parents to decide how they will send their kids to school. Blended, or 100% remote.

Parents (and teachers and principals) have questions that still have not been addressed. Here are some of mine.

Children will supposedly be seated 6 feet apart. And yet are expected to do consistent group work. Will they be shouting at each other across the classroom, with masks on? Will the teachers?

Teachers will be teaching one pod all day (same teachers all subjects for Middle School & High ScHool.)
Does this break union rules?

Schools still haven't been given the go ahead to have parents collect things out of lockers, that have been sitting with food, etc since March.

How will we clean up for the new group of students in all of these schools? Let alone clean for the virus?

What about bathrooms? We know these are one of the largest transmission points. Will there be an attendant in every bathroom? Some schools, have gone years without having soap. How will these things be addressed, especially having just had another budget cut?

Each school is asked to replace the HVAC. How many schools have actually accomplished this? NYC public school system is a small country unto itself, can they accomplish these changes in three weeks?

More transparency is needed.

I keep reading that parents wanted in-school learning. I have also read that for communities that were hardest hit by the virus, have been pushing for safety and all remote learning. This data should be transparent.

Where are the inequities within this system? I can name many already: Wealthier parents will be able to hire private tutors and teachers, private transportation.

Most NYC public school students take public transportation. More contacts for more transmissions.

#GovernorCuomo
Parents are told that the "Vast Majority" of remote learners will be with school communities, but many children will be given to district teachers. This was a huge fail over the summer program. Students need their communities. Especially if we are to address trauma
#GovernorCuomo
Do the same teachers also do lunches in the same classroom they have been teaching in, since students aren't allowed to leave the room? Does this break union rules.

#GovernorCuomo
If we are focused on trauma informed teaching, and addressing the trauma of NY public school kids, which has been said by @DOEChancellor (and I agree we must) why haven't teachers been given this training yet? They only know about it from the press releases.

#GovernorCuomo
And yet, NYC parents are asked to make a decision by TODAY, without these fine points and many others.

It's a big system, the biggest, but these questions (and many others) needed to be addressed before the Parent deadline today.
