/ I enjoyed reading this thread :)
It provides a good contrast to the recent conversation I& #39;ve seen evolving on Twitter. https://twitter.com/geofflangdale/status/1291259122520698882">https://twitter.com/geofflang...
/ I believe the gatekeeping isn& #39;t intentional, but emerges from resource constraints (e.g. we don& #39;t have as many mentors to train apprentices). However, I& #39;m certain that a more optimal solution to this exists. Online courses and schools are promising avenues.
/ One unique advantage the academic setting has is the ability to focus on problems that don& #39;t have immediate utility. It provides a space for people to ask long term questions; to explore approaches that have a high likelihood of failure.
/ I& #39;m curious whether these trends towards "no degrees", can continue to support (and grow) this ecosystem of long term value creation. Existing system incentives suggest not, but I& #39;m optimistic that this situation can change!
/ The pandemic induced acceleration of remote work tech has been incredible to observe! E.g. It& #39;s inspiring how the ML comm has embraced digital confs, which has opened up access to people who otherwise wouldn& #39;t have had the opportunity to attend (due to visas, costs, etc.)
/ I speculate that this coupled with remote universities this semester, could be the seed needed to transition to a better optimal where there& #39;s a freer flow of ideas & people (with ref to 1/)
