hey, if you're thinking of watching atypical please read this thread: https://twitter.com/stageIight/status/1194666798391668738?s=20 as an autistic person reading this has left me feeling mad. for once i had thought id found a tv show where i could see a decent representation of autism but i was wrong. im going to go
into detail as to why this is. now, first of all when i started to watch this show. i didnt think it was too bad. the moment that id started to watch it, sam became my favourite person. now, after reading the thread ive shared im a little sad. thinking back on the show it is
a bad representation of autism. to me im glad the directors consulted autistic people when writing the show. however it seemed like they had a checklist to complete & ticked all the boxes of autistic traits (excluding the non verbal trait) anyway, the thing that upset me most is
that they made it seem like the family was dealing with a difficult situation. to be fair autism is hard to understand at first. the weird thing is sam is 18 during the show so surely they've got a good understanding of his difficulties by then. also the fact that they've made
sam come across as creepy makes me disturbed. like in one episode when he is in therapy he notices the therapists bra strap out & comments on it. another thing is that when he tells his sister he asked a girl out, her automatic response was 'well i assumed she said no' & he
confirms that the girl he asked said yes & she replies with 'well im sorry for her' which to me makes it seem like she thinks he isnt capable of getting a girlfriend. like excuse me, im autistic & ive had one relationship when i was like 14. it may have only lasted a month but
im glad i was able to have at least one. another thing that bothers me is the fact that a majority of fans watching are only interested in the lgbt ship. now im all for lgbt representation in tv shows, ive got to admit casey & izzie are cute af. i mean look at them
but heres the thing, theyve seem to have taken over the show. i feel as though the protagonist (sam) is forgotten about after this. ive got to say i do ship these two but some people seem to only watch it for the lgbt ship not the fact it is supposed to be about an autistic boy
ive got some articles that back up some of my arguments here:
https://www.teenvogue.com/story/netflix-atypical-autism-representation
https://www.salon.com/2017/08/07/netflix-atypical-review/ please read these & try and see where im coming from. im in no way trying to bash this show but it just needed to be said. if youd like to understand & learn what autism
is, here is a website that you can refer to https://www.autism.org.uk/about/what-is.aspx this is a charity called the national autistic society. they are a really good charity and ive raised money for them before. so please read this whole thread to the end & try and see this from my view point
