Last night I got my platinum on Tsushima and I felt conflicted. It is a good game no doubt, but its design feels so old at this point. It's fun to play, but also if you've played Assassin's Creed games or any game of that style of map icon open world...
...then you have already played this game a 100 times. It's kind of missing a real proper gameplay hook that would separate it from the others. When I think about recent games of this style I think Spider-Man, but that games traversal is so unique it easily separates itself.
What Tsushima does best is the world and the photo mode. The world is beautiful and the photo mode is plentiful so they work together well :D Generally the gameplay flow of the world works as well, but it's completely bogged down by the old style of open world design.
There is no real exploring to do, because there's always an icon or a waypoint to go to without thinking about it too much and technically you could explore for yourself, but the rewards for it are non-existent, I'd say even annoying when you bump in to your 600th haiku mat.
This made me think what an absolute beast this game could have been in the style of Breath of the Wild, because the world really is so great and feels very organic. It's just that when all the info about the world is surfaced by map icons it completely squeezes the life out of it
I know I sound very down on the game in this thread but in the end I do think it's a good game. I guess I'm just disappointed because even before launch I could tell exactly what type of game it is from trailers and I'm bummed that I was right
I wish we could move on from 2014

Anyways, if you like Assassin's Creed you'll love this all the same. I enjoyed the story and both stealth and direct combat approaches are fun to play and it looks absolutely beautiful. GGs to Sucker Punch
