Thread about the beauty of Kenshi Yonezu’s Campanella MV (and how it conveys the song’s deeper meaning) https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="✨" title="Funken" aria-label="Emoji: Funken">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🖐️" title="Erhobene Hand mit gespreizten Fingern" aria-label="Emoji: Erhobene Hand mit gespreizten Fingern">
First shot: Kenshi Yonezu& #39;s name over waves on the shore. It& #39;s so dark that it almost appears black. Instantly, we know that it& #39;s a serious MV.

Then, the title card: Campanella. We see Kenshi lit up in red in contrast with the blue surroundings.

So far so good. Cool aesthetic!
Now let’s talk about the title Campanella.

In an interview, Kenshi says it& #39;s from the novel Night on the Galactic Railroad. Lyrics are in the voice of Zanelli, who caused Campanella& #39;s death.

It fits. Blue means grief. Red lighting makes Kenshi& #39;s hands look soaked in blood.
Before we continue w/ the lore, I’d like to note the cinematography:

Wide, cinematic shots that leave lots of negative space in the frame. Contrast between blue (grief) & red (violence). Light yellow sunlight (hope) peeking over a huge dark cliff (weight of guilt).
The girl on the train is introduced. Note that the train is old-fashioned, like the one in the original story. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🚃" title="Eisenbahnwaggon" aria-label="Emoji: Eisenbahnwaggon">

In the story, two friends Giovanni & Campanella travel on the galactic train & see how the journey to the afterlife looks. It’s a scene that influenced many films!
But what does the afterlife look like?

Enter reflections of other people (a reflection is also a symbol of “the other side”). They are people in traditional black clothes, walking onwards. They could be dead, but they could also just represent death.
This brings us back to the original story. Campanella dies by drowning.

So it fits - water or the sea means death, along w/ the people always seen on water. There is no shot of them on land.

Kenshi & the girl on the train (surrounded by blue grief) are witnesses to death.
And now, Kenshi’s gold hands! An excellent design choice, aesthetically & conceptually.

They reference King Midas, who turns everything he touches into gold. This is irony - if Kenshi is singing as Zanelli, then his hands (which were once blood red) are a symbol of his “crime”.
But why is there a red-lit Kenshi & a gold-handed Kenshi? I think they& #39;re showing the process of accepting what happened & letting go.

This explains the gold glitter crumbling away & the hand to his glowing heart, a part of the body associated with love or missing someone.
The girl even cries “gold tears”. Based on the original story, Giovanni feels sadness over the death of Campanella, but he still has to live on.

When people die, we often cry "gold" tears of guilt - they existed, too. Why did they die, not me?
The glitter is so cool to look at btw! I think they painted gold on his hands & her face, but the sparkle was enhanced during coloring/editing stages.

Look at the song lyrics (& theme of the album) - pain/loss/hardship produces a sparkle that you carry with you as you live on.
This all fits in with Kenshi’s intentions behind the song.

According to this interview excerpt, the song is a remembrance of all those who have died since he made his last album 3 years ago.
The MV ends w/ the girl continuing her journey on the train & the gold dust disappearing in the wind.

We felt reds, blues, & golds from our experiences w/ those who have died. But they& #39;re now gone.

"Until the day it ends, so as to get closer,
I want to remember you
Campanella"
And that& #39;s just one song! I admire Kenshi Yonezu for putting so much thought into his music.
