Can’t wait for people to read my books and think I have some of the same political opinions as the characters I write.
On a completely unrelated note I’ve spent the last year writing about a waifu who thinks democracy is stupid.
She’s great I promise.
Most of my characters have pretty vague political stances (as I’m trying to mimick how people work) but there are places where I will make some statements.
For instance book 2 features a CIA analysis and a Green Beret as side characters. I like both these characters. They’re written to be likable and they careers they posses are integral to the story.
But there will be a scene where they acknowledge and joke about all the fuck shit that high level US military and law enforcement gets up to and why they still chose their jobs regardless.
I can’t ignore reality.
There’s a lot of things I do in the novel to maintain MY suspension of disbelief, never mind the audience’s.
For instance I’m writing a book set in Atlanta, so most of the characters my protagonists run into are black.
If that wasn’t the case then the book would just be unrealistic.
Now of course this gets us into the thorny subject of how realistic a story needs to be.
As we’ve learned from pedantic YouTube media criticism, everyone has different standards of what’s immersion breaking in a story.
We all have different lines that can be crossed, different things in our jeeps.
Considering pretty much all storytelling is contingent on massive coincidence and convenience you’re gonna cross someone’s line eventually and write something you think is reasonable...
But someone else thinks is nonsense.
For now ima just worry about my own peeves and maybe make changes if test readers point out something they find dumb or problematic.
And yes it is worth changing the book for the concerns of others so long as it doesn’t diminish the quality or subtract from the themes.
I want this book to be perceived as “good” by as many people as possible so I can get the validation I need to maybe stop hating myself oh god I went too hard where is this thread going I need to go to sleep
