I have a small following but if you have college kids here’s a story.

My daughter was put into a double room at college, but her roommate wasn’t coming due to pandemic. Otherwise I’d have moved her to a single. /1
She decided to attend physical school because of mask requirements and her dropped classes from spring, coupled with availability problems taking important online classes she needed.
She also needs the immersion.
Ok, so she’s there, alls well, then: /2
The day after move in, they shift all of her classes to online except for two hybrids.
Annoying and expensive, but by and large all is still well. Then. /3
The day before school starts she gets a notice they’ve shoved a new roommate into her room.
Keep in mind that there are doubles *empty* across housing.
The housing office says it’s policy to fill half occupied rooms first. Yep. In a pandemic.
It tetchier now but not done.
/4
To rewind a bit...I had a bad feeling about the room thing the day prior to her getting a new roommate, so I started the process of the change. Still awaiting the placement as today was the official count on who didn’t turn up (boatloads). /5
So, the roommate turns up. Nice kid. Shares her social media with my daughter.
Pictures of her and loads of girls at bachelorette party on the town 4 days ago. A beach trip last week etc.
My daughter asks, do you take covid seriously? Oh yes of course, etc.
Daughters nervous. /6
Dorms doubles are crowded, obvs.
My daughter then opens the window and sleeps under her sheet. Middle of the night the girl starts coughing.
My daughter puts on her mask and puts comforter over her head. No sleep after that.
Onto today. /7
Girls coughing in the morning, claims allergies.
My daughter goes out, spends as much time away as possible, but classes are starting, they’re *online*.
She’s suppose to work at her desk in that small room all day with a coughing kid.
I’m on the phone trying to get her moved, /8
...and housing says ‘call tomorrow.’
Right now my daughter is in bed, window open, wearing a mask, under the covers, exchanging gallows humor jokes with her online friends via smartphone.
I’ll now list my takeaways, since we started early, consider them for your college kids.

Unless the rapid test every kid prior to move in, and even if they do (cos you can’t know habits)
***GET A SINGLE***
Sticking your kid in a shared rebreathing shoebox in a pandemic is BAD.
-teach them about air flow & masking. There are common areas in dorms and apts. end // 😓
Postscript: I just got word that she’s got a single. I’ll drive up today when they give me the all-clear and help her move.
