!! tw: self harm !!

im officially 30 days clean :') (one whole month!! yay!!) and for celebration, im gonna do a thread to spread some awareness about it! (this is just from my experience) this will be super messy but oh well.
!! tw: self harm !!
.
what is self harm?

self harm is purposely hurting yourself to compensate for emotional pain, trauma, mental stress, etc. it is different for everyone. it doesn't always involve a sharp object. i don't want to go into detail but here's a few other examples:
!! tw: self harm !!
.
- hitting
- hair pulling
- scratching

whatever it is, dont pressure us to talk about it.
!! tw: self harm !!
.
why do we do it?

everyone's reason for self harm is different, ranging from a sense of control to wanting to feel relief.

the "high" one can get after a session can become addicting, which is why it becomes difficult to stop. ++
(there's a lot of science that goes with this. information and materials can be found online if you want to learn more.)

whatever it is, dont pressure us to talk about it.
!! tw: self harm !!
.
how can i help? (this is based on MY experience. i do not speak for the whole or even the majority of the community.)

i found it helpful when people didn't treat me differently. seeing someone's wounds and scars can be daunting, but treating them like ++
!! tw: self harm !!
.
a fragile piece of glass can make it worse. dont constantly ask if i did it, how my wounds are, if i still have urges. i will open up when i feel safe enough. ++
!! tw: self harm !!
.
questions that would be helpful (in my case, again i do not speak for all of us)

- do you need a distraction?
- do you need space?
- do you want to talk about (insert any topic)?
- show them something they like (ex: i like cats, my friends show me cat pics)
!! tw: self harm !!
.
questions/responses that personally did not help

- why do you do it?
- promise me you wont do it again
- dont do it or ill cry/ get mad
- please dont do it
- how are your wounds?
- do you still have urges?
- whens the last time you did it?
people will open up if they feel safe enough. dont ask them such heavy questions. the answers to these questions are very personal.
!! tw: self harm, blood !!
.
why are trigger warnings important?

anything can be someone's trigger. seeing a small wound, blood, even seeing a single word. we're not trying to be "sensitive". we dont want these triggers to exist, but they do and we can't help the reaction++
!! tw: self harm, panic/anxiety attack, dissociating !!
.
we get from them.

responses to these triggers can be literally anything. blanking out, dissociating, having a panic attack or an anxiety attack (yes they are different), breaking down ++
!! tw: self harm, relapse, panic, dissociating, relapse !!
.
++ to having a conplete relapse.
remember to approach them properly. (this is from MY experience)

if they are panicking, dont just bombard them with your presence.

if they are dissociating, do not try and ++
++ ground them abruptly.
give them space and ask what they need. what y o u think would be the solution isn't always t h e i r solution.
that's the end. this thread is really messy but i was so happy bc of my 1 month and just wanted to get this thread out so bad.
