If, like me, you define yourself as an independent, moderate, or centrist, who worries about extremist political ideology on both the right and the left, consider this. Only one of the two major parties has thus far nominated and subordinated itself to a fringe candidate. 1/
Say what you will about the far left, but Democratic primary voters nominated an experienced, relatively moderate candidate in Joe Biden. Why do you think the far left wing doesn’t like him? Because he’s reasonable and willing to work with the other side to get things done. 2/
The same can no longer be said of the Republican Party, which turned away 15 other more qualified candidates in 2016—some of them quite moderate—in favor of Donald Trump. Worse, as he’s proven all of his critics right over the past 3+ years, the GOP has only dug in deeper. 3/
I see some of you say, “I can’t stand Trump, but the Democrats are so extreme.” Yes, there’s a left-wing fringe. And yes, it could overtake the Democratic Party someday (or not). But if you’re truly concerned about extremism, look no further than the GOP—it’s already here. 4/4
