One thing that incinerates my nerves about the whole Kriner’s Diner et al. actively defying emergency orders during a pandemic by staying open is that they call it “a form of protest / civil disobedience” and “fighting for freedom.”

Freedom. To eat burgers indoors.
These are a lot of the same people who have nothing but terrible, ignorant, racist, reductive things to say about *real* protesters who fight for the equity, safety, and justice for black and brown lives.

Actual protests that fight for freedom & justice. And they can’t stand it.
1. It shows that these ignorant people truly do not care about black and brown lives, as they criticize these protests. Full stop. They only care about their “fundamental right” to eat chicken fried steak in an enclosed space.

2. This isn’t about freedom. It’s about politics.
3. The Trump era has been nothing but toxic, divisive, and dangerous to our country and our community at a cellular level. It’s emboldened self-righteous stupidity, it’s fueled a warped indignation in our most racist, most uninformed people. It’ll take generations to repair this.
4. Fake news has also infiltrated our community at a cellular level. I dont know why I’m shocked anymore at how far & fast it spreads- right here in Anchorage. Poorly researched political blogs churn out conspiracy theory hit pieces & people blindly accept it as fact. Astounding.
5. Actively ignoring/defying official emergency orders in the wake of a global pandemic that has killed 700K people worldwide is NOT a form of protest. It’s an act of lethal selfishness. It’s the reason why we will be in this mess for the duration of 2020 rather than recovering.
(For those who are like ‘wtf is she talking about’ — several Alaskan businesses, namely restaurants, are “taking a stand” against safety measures put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Anchorage, as our case numbers keep rocketing at a rate that poses a grave threat.)
6. If your actions result in the endangerment of the community, contribute to overloading our testing sites, contact tracing abilities & most importantly our hospitals — you do not care about this community. You care about your profits & sticking your tongue out at local leaders.
7. When you actively defy emergency orders, you are spitting in the faces of healthcare workers and hospital staff who are bending over backwards to keep people alive; you are spitting in the faces of first responders who have constant contact with the general public;
When you defy emergency orders, you are spitting in the faces of our community’s kids who just want to go back to school in a safe, semi-normal environment. You rob them of the ability to get back to their education, their friends, their activities, their lives as they knew it;
When you actively defy emergency orders, you are spitting in the faces of our community’s educators who already work their asses off to take care of your kids, enrich their lives and minds, and mold them into decent human beings; you are endangering their lives, too;
When you actively defy emergency orders, you are spitting in the faces of every local small business owner and worker that actually DO follow emergency orders because it will get us our of this mess sooner. Your selfishness makes it harder for them to survive this pandemic.
I feel stupid for believing that COVID-19 could be the thing that unites our country and our community, regardless of politics - because I thought we would all prioritize the SAFETY, the longevity, the viability of our communities. I feel like maybe I was wrong. Because... look.
Everyone is suddenly an expert in epidemiology and the constitution. And not listening to the *actual* experts. The reality is that some folks are desperate to find a shrivel of literature or authority that can be warped to validate their beliefs and actions. It’s maddening.
No, I won’t be patronizing restaurants/businesses that put our community in danger. Not now, not a year from now, not ever. When they send a message that they don’t care if their cashflow may cause sickness & death, we have every right to condemn them & withdraw support.
There are many locally owned small businesses in Anchorage playing by the rules & putting our community’s safety first. They deserve your dollars, they deserve your generous tipping, they deserve your signal-boosting social media posts. Support them.
