The fact that I got both SKINNY SHAMED by my family and SKINNY PRAISED by my friends into having body dysmorphia & an eating disorder as a middle schooler... my line of thought was literally “I’m so fat, I must get skinnier” when I was ALREADY underweight. [Thread]
I‘ve had issues with food my entire life. A lot of foods genuinely make me want to throw up. I can’t do certain textures or smells. I’ve gotten better about eating more types of foods, and I’m proud of myself for it and thankful to the people that have helped me with it.
I’ve realized that I’m bad at giving advice on these topics because I literally got bullied out of my eating disorder, which worked but I don’t think that’s the right approach for everyone. Thankfully my condition didn’t get worse than it already was, but this isn’t the same
reality for everyone. You can’t always look at someone and immediately tell they have an ED or body dysmorphia. You have to look at their habits and what they say. And if you notice something, do what you can to help them. Make them feel valid in their own skin.
Don’t force food on people that don’t want it. Instead you could encourage them to eat the foods they enjoy on their own time when they’re hungry. Eating generally healthy amounts of food and keeping it down is better than eating no food at all because our bodies need nutrients
to function. When your body isn’t getting the nutrients you need (or well, any nutrients at all) you’ll feel like sh*t physically, and if you have an ED chances are you already feel like sh*t mentally too. Anyways, I guess I’ll start wrapping this up.
I made this thread bc I was mad at how the media (ESPECIALLY social media) and society has warped our self image. My little sister that’s 8 years younger than me has suffered from these same issues for different reasons. And it breaks my heart that in 8 years nothing has changed.
To all my friends that are struggling with any issues related to this in any way: YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, YOU ARE LOVED, YOU ARE VALID! None of us are perfect. We are all human, and we are all different, but that’s what makes us special. Love and miss you guys 💕
