This is such a soapbox issue for me. ENLISTED EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT. a thread. https://twitter.com/paul_scharre/status/1291078808347574273
The notion that enlisted ranks are stupid and not worth investing is antiquated notion. As future wars push command and capabilities downward, NCOs and senior NCOs will be the tip of that spear. There are only a handful of officers in a company but dozens of NCOs
If we invest a quarter of the time and energy we do to officer education to enlisted education, I suspect that retention and quality of NCOs would skyrocket. Hands down. I would have stayed in the Corps if I could have pursued school like officers can.
There are a myriad of ways to improve NCO education. Even in my field of wargaming, we need to do more to push wargaming downward to the operating forces and enlisted ranks. Wargaming should not be the sole domain of O5s and above.
And how can we expect senior NCOs to serve as senior military advisors to their counterparts when the opportunities they are given to better themselves are so scarce. You do both the NCOs and the officers they are paired with a huge disservice.
And as NCOs get better informed and educated, they will hopefully also get larger roles in shaping the visions of their services so it is not a system of majority serfs and a few privileged officers.
Ppl always talk about ground truth in strategy, well you know who is on the ground, freaking enlisted. And beyond the benefit to the service, you set up enlisted better for life after service if you educate them and arm them with the tools needed in civilian life.
End of thread. I shall step down from my soapbox.... Until next time.
