I’m a hiring manager. I’m a big believer in cover letters. I love them. I do not like this cover letter. Here’s my thread on why

I know this is just a generic example but all it says is “I’m good at job”. That’s what everyone says. Your cover letter should reflect why you’re *right for =this= job*
Tell me about your specific personal approach as it applies to the job description
“I’m ready for this challenge” why? What makes you feel that? Prove it with an example or a story. Link to something that shows your problem solving methods and unique point of view.
Even better, use your cover letter to show me. Show me! Put links to blogs, articles, and projects you’re personally tied to, to pieces of work you’ve created.
Use your cover letter to talk about what you love and why you’re excited. “We’re a perfect fit”. Why? How? What makes this appeal to you?
If you’re not going to be personal and not going to link to examples of your work or thought process, just send the resume alone.
Be opinionated. Give some subjective thoughts. The job says you need to use java but you love python. Say so! Say why! Give some insight to what you like and why you like it. Ultimately it’s cool you can work with java. But you’ll bring your python skills to the role too.
Cover letters are awesome and I love when candidates include them. But if you’re just going to use boring business speak and a bunch of nice sounding pablum, don’t bother.
