"IG saw the success of Tik Tok and ripped it off"

That's what everyone will say, but it's WAY MORE complex than that. The way we view & use social platforms is changing & Reels is a pivot to address that change.

Remember OG Instagram? Like take a picture of your coffee, post multiple times a day Instagram?

Those days are over. Somewhere along the way IG became an art gallery. Unless you are a brand or an inlfuencer your feed is reserved for the best moments.
This shift meant regular users posted less & your feed was filled with brands instead of your peers.

Users wanted a place that isn't polished. A place where like counts don't matter. Somewhere you can be your raw, authentic self.

Insert Stories.
Stories is a hit. We love Stories. Boasting 500m users it's essentially its own social network within Instagram.

With Stories we now have a place for our highlights & the BTS, but what if we want to be creative?

Insert Tik Tok.
To this point creative storytelling was reserved for those who knew how to use a camera, Premiere Pro, and YouTube.

But what if we eliminated some of those barriers and made expressing your creativity easier?
Despite the genius of the "For You" page (a thread for another time). The magic of Tik Tok is the way it eliminates barriers for creativity.

Tik Tok's creative tools are incredible. They allow users to be creative without needing to know camera gear or how to apply presets.
No longer are users just documenting their lives—they're creating, dancing, and becoming storytellers.

Just as users don't post pictures of their avocado toast to their IG feeds anymore. It's no longer sufficient to just document—users want to create!

Insert Reels.
Does it feel like Tik Tok? No doubt, but if users want to be more creative it's a no brainer for IG to provide a place to express that creativity.

Will Reels be successful? Maybe, maybe not—but the market has shown these are the features users want.
Man, this was nerdy. Hope someone enjoyed it. Let me know your thoughts on the state of social and if you think Reels is going to be the next big thing! ⤵️
