Musings of an ex nurse/copper on .. well.. people!
1/You cannot ‘train’ a person to be empathetic.
You cannot ‘train’ a person to be compassionate.
You cannot ‘train’ a person to be accepting.
You cannot ‘teach’ these qualities.
2/ These are qualities a person should possess in abundance if working in a vocational role.
No amount of ‘training’ will change the mindset of the egotistical person who slips through the net in interview.
3/ ‘Training’ will not protect disabled people from this narrow minded person treating them as if they are incapable of having a view on how they should be treated/spoken to/involved in issues applicable to themselves!
4/ ‘Training’ is not going to protect my boys as there is no onus on those treating them to adhere to that training and no reprimand if they fail!
The only way I can see my boys being respected and treated fairly is by making the LAW protect their right to equality.
5/ Give the LAW ‘teeth’.
Ensure the LAW treats those who discriminate are penalised, to the same measure as they would be if they acted in the same way towards a non disabled member of the public!
The LAW needs to be enacted to protect ALL equally
6/ Rules carved in stone, no ambiguity or loopholes, and actionable if broken.

‘Training’ should be ensuring the LAW is learned, understood and adhered to.

People might then think twice about their approach and practices if they knew they could be sued or arrested.
