Following some of these fandub convos & even though I don't work in anime, I am a VA with some (hopefully) helpful advice (+ I get similar q's!):
1) Dubs/impressions should never go on demo's. Demo's should either be snippets of your work or original character's you come up with.
2) In my opinion, if you’re just starting out, taking classes should be your first priority. Not auditioning. You don’t want to get in front of casting before you’re ready. You want your first impression to be a great impression! Best foot forward, er, best…. voice forward? 😂
3) @JennyYokobori has a great post about starting out by working on student animation, which is another option to test out the waters and get a taste what working in VO is like! You can find it here: https://twitter.com/JennyYokobori/status/1290757688184279040
4) It’s not anyone’s job but your own to do the research and work needed to get your foot in the door. When people offer advice, it’s them being nice. I have /friends/ prefacing q's withm ‘I hope this is ok, but I could use some VO advice’ (*spoiler* it is always ok! Ask away!)
5) VO may look fun and easy, but trust me, it is hard work and it does cost a lot of money, aka investments, and /time/ to get started working as a professional. Instead of spending $$$ on college courses, you’ll be spending $$$ on equipment, demo’s, classes, websites and more.
6) The VO community is really welcoming, warm and full of geeks (like me!) No one's gate-keeping, lying or purposefully giving bad advice to keep newcomers out. It’s just… difficult to break into at all. For more q's or resources I rec checking out: http://iwanttobeavoiceactor.com  ☺️
Oh! And most importantly, 7) Always remember that voice acting is ACTING first and foremost. You don't even have to start out in VO specific classes! Those are great once you're ready, but getting your feet wet in scene-study & improv classes is a smart career investment too.
