Today’s proposed amendments begin to repair the harm done to black & brown communities by reducing the size and scope of what SPD does while also making a down payment on investments in BIPOC community health & safety models.

We continue to create a roadmap to 50% in the Fall
We did not actualize a 50% reduction to SPD in the 2020 balancing package as of yet, but we made critical steps to get us there in the Fall budget session
The summer inquest into SPD’s budget:

1. Proved we need to redefine and reimagine public safety and
2. Laid out the difficulties in making significant cuts this summer
The following are actions @CMLGonzalez @CMTMosqueda @Lisa_Herbold proposed to take today that lays the groundwork for the fall session in 7 weeks.
Separate from limiting SPD’s scope is the need to invest in BIPOC communities. We are fully committed to getting dollars out the door this year.
These changes we make today will pave the path for more community safety in the September-November budget process.
Through transfers, cuts, and savings, we can reduce the scope of SPD by 50%, here’s how:
We’ve outlined and identified possible transfers, cuts and reductions in the fall budget to get to a 43% cut to SPD. We look forward to working with community in the upcoming weeks to get us to the guiding principle of defunding SPD by 50% and reinvesting in community.
