Let’s talk white privilege in LGBTQIA+ fandoms and how POC ships get less respect and less support from fans.
To help sustain the #BlackLivesMatter movement and address the COVID-inspired anti-Asian racism we need to explore the importance of positive POC LGBTQIA+ representation
The other day I tweeted that I could write an entire essay on the importance of seeing this kiss in The Carmilla Movie but I wasn't in the proper mind space for it. https://twitter.com/natvanlis/status/1289972363724029953
As nice as it is that a vast majority of replies agree or support the sentiment that this is the most iconic kiss, there are some replies saying that if Hollstein had more kisses this wouldn't be the case, or that it doesn't matter coz by the end of the movie, Mel is left alone.
For context for anyone finding this thread who doesn't know what Carmilla is, it's a very popular web series that started in 2014 and received worldwide critical acclaim for its queer rep. However, in its first season, fans noted a distinct lack of POC representation.
In its second season, POC characters were brought on board to address these concerns, but it raised even more issues when POC became vocal that the representation wasn't the best, with BIPOC characters cast as either a villain, or were glaringly underdeveloped.
While the producers and writers tried to listen and learn, the fandom itself began shutting down these concerns, with a lot of the white part of the fanbase silencing, speaking over, or speaking for POC. I've detailed personal experiences on this matter before in other threads.
Suddenly, a large part of the fanbase that had helped increase the popularity of this show were made to feel unsafe and driven out.
This is not an attack on this fandom specifically, as I've seen this very disturbing trend in other fandoms of white LGBTQIA+ ships.
Now, with this context, I circle back to my first tweet.
For the white-privleged people who don't see any harm in silencing, speaking over, or speaking for POC when we ask for better or more representation, I am putting our concerns in a bigger picture.
It can't just be that #BlackLivesMatter . Black lives need more than just to survive. Black lives are worthy. Black lives are needed. And this needs to be reflected in the media we support, in the art we consume, in the dynamics we support. Because Representation Matters.
And that is why this kiss, between two POC, is iconic. It gives POC representation in a space and in a fandom that is predominantly white. The concept that it would become less iconic by drowning it out with more kisses from a white wlw ship is damaging,
because it yells that you don’t want to see us. That you don’t want us to get the same support and visibility that you do. That the idea of parity between a white ship and a POC ship makes you feel threatened. And so does pointing out that half of the ship doesn’t make it.
In 2020, as a Chinese woman, I have been spit on and coughed on during the COVID emergency.
BIPOC specifically have faced more trauma than white people, and continue to face worsening trauma from systemic racism from the prison system, police brutality, and hate crimes in general
The LGBTQIA+ is already marginalized and this is why the community needs to stand together and protect our most vulnerable, rather than turn on each other or silence each other. We need to lift up BIPOC rep and grow it. Their struggles and voices matter as much as their lives do.
I have had numerous conversations with different white people in the LGBTQIA+ fandom about my concern for the lack of support for POC ships compared to white ships, and each time I’ve been met with responses similar to “but there aren’t as many.”
This may be one of the largest roadblocks in this discussion, and it’s not true. There ARE well-written POC LGBTQIA+ ships where at least one of the characters are POC. They just don’t always receive the same attention or support.
Here are 15 LGBTQIA+ ships with at least one POC:
1) Mel and Charlotte - #Carmilla ( @carmillaseries)
[YouTube / VHX - comedy / drama / mystery]
The ship I mentioned earlier in the thread, with the extremely talented @nicolestamp and @gracelynnkung, who give us an iconic POC LGBTQIA+ ship ON THE BIG SCREEN for #TheCarmillaMovie
2) Benson and Troy - #KipoAndTheAgeOfTheWonderbeasts
[Netflix - animated series]
Budding relationship, but wholesome all the same! The show as a whole does amazing BIPOC representation. Also, @netflix @DRMWRX Renew Kipo!
3) George and Lance - #She-Ra ( @DreamWorksSheRa)
[Netflix - animated series] #spop
We all love us some #Catradora, and both are headcanoned as Latinx, but are not stated specifically so in the show. George and Lance, however, are there to give us a nice cycle of Dad Jokes.
4) Korra and Asami - #LegendOfKorra
[Nickelodeon, soon Netflix - animated series]
Hopefully we’re about to get some new faces in the fandom when the show hits Netflix, so I don’t want to spoil anything else about these two badass ladies that make up #Korrasami
5) Amanita and Nomi - #Sense8 ( @sense8)
[Netflix - science fiction]
#Nominita is widely praised for its trans rep by @MsJamieClayton ( #translivesmatter too) and @FreemaOfficial as the fiery Amanita is what every progressive activist pair needs
6) Jill and Taylor - #BIFL ( @BIFLseries)
[webseries - comedy / drama]
I think listing #Jaylor together at all is a spoiler so all I’m gonna say is this show has great representation across the board and has a lot of heart. Definitely worth checking out!
7) Claire and Nico - #Clairevoyant ( @clairevoyantsho)
[webseries - comedy]
We love @natvanlis as an adorkable and awkward little bean having an iconic first date. The show primarily focuses on the heartwarming friendship of its leads, but @SabrynRock is a welcome gem
8) Lito and Hernando - #Sense8 ( @sense8)
[Netflix - science fiction]
Another widely praised ship is this wonderful representation of two Latinx men who share an unbreakable and pure love for each other, played by the charming @ma_silvestre and @ponchohd
9) Camille and Amanda - #Stitchers ( @StitchersTV)
[Freeform / Hulu - science fiction]
The support, kindness, and love from this show & its fandom were unconditional. The respect for the relationship between @AnnaAkana &@allisonscag’s characters remains almost unparalled
10) Kelly and Yorkie - San Junipero, #BlackMirror ( @blackmirror)
[Netflix - science fiction] #SanJunipero
Ooooh baby, do you know what that’s worth? Ooooh Heaven is a place on Earth
(and so was this award-winning episode that gave us a welcome twist on the usual Black Mirror ep)
11) Elena and Syd - @OneDayAtATime
[Netflix -> PopTV - sitcom]
#ODAAT is a show that deals with racism, sexism, homophobia, mental illness, economic struggles, and more, with so much heart. @Isabella_Gomez as Elena and @sheridan_pierce as the lovable nonbinary Syd is a treasure.
12) Santana and brittany - #Glee ( @OfficialGLEEtv)
[Fox / Netflix - musical comedy]
Having a wlw ship on a show with a massive audience & a large young demographic meant so much to the community. @NayaRivera & @HeatherMorrisTV shine apart & as #brittana, and we were better for it
13) Captain Holt and Kevin - #BrooklynNineNine ( @nbcbrooklyn99)
[NBC / Hulu - comedy]
@AndreBraugher & @MarcEvanJackson do so well as the hilariously stoic Captain Holt and his husband Kevin in #BrooklynNineNine, helping normalize gay male characters with roles without tokenism
14) Sage and Brooklyn - #Utopia Falls ( @UtopiaFallsTV)
[Hulu / CBC - science fiction]
This show has the power to change the world. Powerful, revolutionary, & inspiring in its BIPOC representation, we also get @HumberlyG &@devynnekoda12 as #Sagelyn, a strong healthy LGBTQIA+ ship
15) Anissa and Grace - #BlackLightning ( @blacklightning)
[CW / Netflix - superhero]
As a superhero show, this show already does a lot for BIPOC representation. #Thundergrace, a supportive & powerful BIPOC LGBTQIA+ ship, makes the show a shining beacon of hope for representation
Honorable mentions:
Rosa Diaz - #Brooklyn99 ( @nbcbrooklyn99) [NBC / Hulu - comedy]
Eric Effiong - #SexEducation ( @sexeducation) [Netflix - comedy / drama]
Kat Edison - #TheBoldType ( @TheBoldTypeTV) [Freeform / Hulu - comedy / drama]
Garnet - #StevenUniverse [CN / Hulu - animated]
Honorable mentions, pt 2:
Lionel Higgins - #DearWhitePeople ( @DearWhitePeople) - [Netflix - comedy / drama]
Curtis Holt - #Arrow ( @CW_Arrow) [CW / Netflix - superhero]
Ambrose Spellman - The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ( #CAOS) ( @sabrinanetflix) [Netflix - supernatural horror]
Please note this list isn’t at all the be-all end all of POC LGBTQIA+ representation, as I’ve got stuff like #POSE ( @PoseOnFX) on my To-Watch list, or heard @coupleish is good as well but haven’t personally watched it. Feel free to add on! These are simply what I’ve watched.
tl;dr - #BlackLivesMatter and #RepresentationMatters and POCs (specifically, BIPOC) need to stop being ignored in #LGBT spaces and fandoms. Try and check out some of these ships to support the entire community! We deserve happy endings, too. We deserve love, too.

Just realizing I took the time out to write and post this whole thread..... and left it full of typos 😂😂
If you go through the comments to the tweets:
I tagged the actresses who play Thundergrace and the other half of the Stitchers and Sagelyn ships!
Satan help me, I dont know HOW I overlooked Mambo Marie and Zelda in #CAOS ( @sabrinanetflix)

Brain fart and forgot this one but as this tweet mentions I’m not 100% confident in calling this great BIPOC LGBTQIA+ representation given that I don’t trust the writers and producers with this ship one bit 😂

Freya and Keelin - #TheOriginals ( @cworiginals)
So @edrewry11 just DMed me about them which is hilarious coz I shipped #Freelin SO hard when the show was airing but I never finished the last season and assumed they didnt get a happy ending. They 100% wouldve made my original list
(Played by the lovely @christinamoses and @Lifeofrileyv )
Just realized I meant to look up the details and got busy so I forgot to add this one to the list!
Elida and Amae - #VagrantQueen
Black Queer Lead alert! #SaveVagrantQueen https://twitter.com/leanansidhe220/status/1291182925904523265?s=19
Related to this thread but something i dont have personal experience with is LGBTQIA+ cons and how these conventions are INCREDIBLY unwelcoming for POC, from the planning phase to its execution. From C*exacon getting its name from a super racist fanbase...
To cons meant for mostly-white fandoms, to the recent thread outlining QFX's racist practices, I dont know how many more instances we need before white LGBTQIA+ members finally HEAR us and SEE us POC saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. https://twitter.com/moonstiina/status/1290696225662988291?s=19
Too often i have seen POC driven out of these fandoms, made to feel unsafe, unwelcome, and have our resulting mental illness struggles mocked and dismissed. I understand the LGBTQIA+ community wants more. You dont have to step on POC to get it. https://twitter.com/GirlVillains/status/1297665826523353089?s=19
