‘Ireland is only free because of the British Army’ is an interesting take when six of its counties are still occupied by the British State and over 1900 men and women in the North were forcefully interned without trial in recent memory.
Southerners don’t get to dictate whether we’re allowed to be upset over this or not. It’s an ignorant, ill-informed decision, compounded by the fact that she then paid tribute to a man who spent his entire life protecting his community from the same army she’s now recruiting for.
Some of you have been taking the soup for far too long, lads.
Would encourage you to engage in your own history post-1916. Make this same thread every year, but a lot of your empathy and solidarity ends at the border. You’ll never understand or inherit the generational trauma in NI, but it’s your duty to educate yourselves nonetheless.
There wasn’t a peep when yousins were losing the run of yourselves over people claiming Irish actors as British last week, but when Northerners are rightfully angry for a legitimate reason the tone isn’t right for you? I just don’t understand how you can be so obtuse.
You know, I’ve always said the biggest obstacle to a United Ireland isn’t loyalists, it’s Free Staters who still view us as ‘others’ or ‘themins up there’. There’s a whole discussion needed on why acts of rage, violence and revolution are only noble and heroic in the South.
Not encouraging a pile on on Laura Whitmore but if you can’t understand the nuance of why people in the North are taking issue with her decision - especially after the loss of John Hume - please refrain from speaking. No one needs to hear it.
