First Love - A thread explaining this meaningful song and why Yoongi is a genius.
In the song, Yoongi talks about his youth and old memories with his piano. It demonstrates how he learned more as he grew up. But at that time, Yoongi was happy without knowing the true significant of the piano.
However, as he grew up, he neglected the piano more and more as his interest was slowly disappearing. He realised then that wherever he is, the piano will always be protecting Yoongi and his joyful and nostalgic memories that he had when he was a child.
‘Even if I go, don’t worry, because you’ll do well on your own.’

This is the piano’s position in Yoongi’s life. It’s telling Yoongi that it’ll always be there for him no matter how far he goes. The piano is his safe space.
When Yoongi fell into despair and depression and became hopeless, he pushed away the piano away from him; he felt guilty/sad that even though he did that, the piano continues to stay strongly beside him.
‘You didn't have to say anything
So don't ever let go of my hand
Because I won't let go of you
A second time
My birth and the end of my life
You'll always protect those things.’

This is the significance of the piano to Yoongi. It’s his protection and safe place.
Moreover, this song is a masterpiece in the way it’s produced. Yoongi uses emotional imagery in order to allow the reader to clearly depict and imagine the story in their head.
The emotions Yoongi felt towards the piano allows us to view the piano more as a person rather than an object as he used the words ‘resent’, ‘yearned’ and saying to the piano to ‘greet me happily’ and not to ‘feel sorry’ to him.
All of this allows us to understand the connection Yoongi feels towards the piano as we can understand how their relationship is just as important (if not, more) as a relationship between a mother and her child. This is because the piano has been there since he was a baby.
The piano has watched Yoongi grew taller than them and all of his happy times and sad times, including for when Yoongi cried and yearned for them.
This whole song allows us to understand and imagine how a bond between a person and an object can be just as important as between two people. It’s heartbreaking since they were parted and Yoongi re-met the piano at age 14 with awkwardness at his breaking point, when he gave up.
In the end, they are reunited together and the song starts the same way as it ends, which suggests how Yoongi managed to go through everything and be at his lowest point but that won’t break the bond between him and his piano.
The end. Sorry if it’s a bit confusing and please correct me if there’s anything I said that was incorrect. 💜
