Poor remuneration of lawyers is not always a problem with the profession. It’s even more an economic problem.

We bash adverts way too much. The assumption that any firm in Lagos can pay more than 50k is just ridiculous. This is not a significantly lucrative business.
The moment we accept it, the better. There’s nothing we see today that is not largely decided by the economic ruins in this country.

There are way too many lawyers with only few decent law firms. Bash a 40k advert all you want but someone will die for that job.
That’s the reality of things and not until there is a policy barring lawyers without enough means from advancing into private practices, the situation will not change and your bashing has little to do with it.

It’s a very hard economic situation even for employers.
Lawyers that earn really well in this country are statistically few; it’s almost a lifetime privilege for any one to be in that category.

If you compare law to other professions in this country, you’d realise many lawyers are even more fortunate.
I know there are lawyers who are decidedly foul in their approach towards remuneration for lawyers especially new wigs.

My point is simple: it’s not every little firm’s advert you see out there that you bash. You don’t like the pay, move on. Someone else will take it.
Our begrudging stance will not save a dying man. A perennially unemployed lawyer will take a 30k job and the numbers do not help.

The economy is the main problem. If Lagos wasn’t about the only developed state in Nigeria, the story would be different.
Don’t transmute the economic problems and faults of our leaders unto a self-struggling employer in a small law firm every damn time you see a salary offer that disagrees with your standards.

What should be and what is, are two different things. It’s a sad story.
