When we started organizing towards this agency fight 2+ years ago almost everyone I spoke to told me it was impossible. That we could never, ever, get the agencies to change their business practices. That they’d never, ever, ever, willingly turn off the packaging spigot.

I never believed that. I always knew this was possible. Our potential power was and has always been greater than theirs. I never doubted that. But there were some dark nights when I doubted our ability as leaders to make sure the membership at large didn't lose faith.

But this is the thing about unions, as long as we keep our arms linked, a handful can stumble and fall. And still, we're all carried forward, together.

My gratitude for my fellow members is boundless. What a goddamned honor to be among you. The captains who had thousands of conversations with friends and coworkers, giving them faith in our power together. You all are goddamned champions.

Those who stayed committed in spite of hardship and uncertainty, you are heroes. You have changed the world not just for us, but for the next generation. Thank you for every angry, nervous email you sent me. Thank you for the opportunity to listen to and support you.

And to those who never believed, and never supported, thank you for the lessons in patience and acceptance.

Leadership is accepting responsibility for creating the conditions that allow others to achieve shared purpose in the face of uncertainty.

It was the honor and privilege of my life to have served in leadership during this fight. But it's you all, the thousands of members who linked arms and stood strong who won it. We just kept reminding you that you could.

Please remember how this feels next time we have to fight. Because we will. And I believe that we will win.
