The myth that North African Arabs aren’t true Arabs
[Thread] 👇
This myth is constantly pushed by racists Berberists (wishing to change the North African identity) and racist Mashriqis (wishing to claim and hog all Arab achievements)
The main piece of evidence they use is commercial DNA tests from companies like 23&Me and http://Ancestry.com .
They prey on people that don’t know better but little do they know that these DNA tests are not real genealogy.
Commercial DNA tests are not science, they use reference populations, so when you get 80% North African that means 80% of your DNA is similar to North Africans (the whole Arab-Berber mix) and not 80% Amazighi.
These DNA tests show you where your ancestors lived in the past 200 years or so, whereas we know North African Arabs inhabit North Africa for over a thousand years.
Do they really think these commercial DNA test companies have all the science figured out and the origins of humanity mapped out?
If so then why do genealogists still exist? Why do top genealogists never reference DNA tests?
In fact genealogists often minimise the significance of a commercial DNA test
So what do genealogists use? They use Y-DNA and mtDNA to determine a population’s origins.
Let’s focus on Y-DNA as it’s the most studied.
Genealogists agree on J1 to be the Arabic lineage Haplogroup (and some say from Qahtani tribes in Yemen)

The distribution of J1 is as such (numbers may differ from test to test but a significant J1 is always found in North Africa).
More tests.
Now from a historical and tribal point of view, we also have evidence as we know a lot of Arab tribes moved into Muslim North Africa. The 2 main tribes were Banu Sulaym and Banu Hilal. And these weren’t small migrations.
It is reported that 200,000 families from only Banu Hilal, migrated into Western Libya a thousand years ago at a time where the population of the whole of Libya was only 500,000
We also notice a very high proportion of Bedouin Arabs in North Africa https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedouin
We can see from this that the country’s with the highest proportion of Bedouins are Sudan, Libya and Jordan, and of course the gulf countries.
I always say it’s impossible for a population to change its culture and language without the significant presence of the other population
Pure amazigh only exist in isolated regions such as the mountains or the desert (which is why Berber speaking populations usually come from there)
There are many definitions to what an Arab is, but as we can see under all definitions, North African Arabs are Arabs.
This thread was not made to minimise the amazigh identity or ethnicity, but rather we have to acknowledge both as part of North Africa.
If we go back 10 generations we find 2^10 = 1024 ancestors, it’s almost certain none of us are pure anything (unless you live isolated for example in the mountains)
so our ethnicity is Arab-Berber (some more Arab and some more Berber) and our culture is Arabic for Arabs and Amazigh for Amazighs.
These are all Libyans (first picture is Amazighs in Nafusa mountains)
I’m not going to get into the origins of the Amazigh people as there’s many different opinions and that requires a whole different thread.
Also I’m not going to get into the Adnani (Arabised) and Qahtani/Yemeni (original Arabs) fractions of Arabs as this would require a whole different thread.
The purpose of this thread is to make North African Arabs feel confident and comfortable in their Arab identity, no matter if either side try deny it.
Another W for North African Arabs 🔥
