It is interesting to see how status symbols shift so fast.
In Urbanised Middle class and above(predominantly UC though), it is a status symbol for parents to let their DIL work.
But in upwardly mobile LC(this is taking in both SC/ST/OBC) which are mainly dependent on (1/n)
Government jobs(*wink wink*dowry circle) strongly frown on the idea of working bahus. Infact the girls volunteer to become stay at home wives and it is seen as a prestige issue To have a stay at home wife and afford maid army.

I have worked in Jungle Mahal Bastar and Santal Pargana on various NGO stints and have acquitances in Silchar and Agartala.
In the former 3 places, the tribals are very eager to get their women into the workforce regardless the profile.

Personally mentored many girls who got Government jobs, opened their own cottage industry, studying in Good unis, etc. However in Agartala Silchar Haflong it is a status symbol among Tribal girls to aspire for a housewife status(even more so in the elite section)

And these sections of the society don't even have sufficient number of "good" husbands who can afford a decent one-income lifestyle in a tier 2 city.
Still it is aspirational to become a housewife in one group of tribals and to become a working woman in another.

Again among socially orthodox UCs, there is almost an Unanimous agreement on not letting women work outside and they explicitly cite Eliteness and status as a reason for their position.
But these opinions are mocked and made fun of in your average MC circles

Even if one makes a benevolent defense of housewives Like it is the duty of men to provide for the upkeep and a man is being nice by keeping a housewife and also having a littany of maids for her it is being looked as something of a joke in urban metro India(7/n)
