how i imagine the winx base level transformations (should??) work: a thread
i’m not talking about activation or limitations/powers or even a way to earn them. i am talking purely designs. we rarely—if ever—get an explanation for why the transformations look the way they do, and that’s not an issue for me, BUT i think i figured out how they MIGHT work
essentially, i think you kind of ”choose” your outfit. you mold your notion of how a fairy transformation is supposed to look by seeing other fairies that have come before you, or ones that you see around you. take bloom as our first example!
bloom’s first transformation is in the third episode of season 1, but before that she’s already seen stella and the rest of the winx girls transform, and therefore she has a ”base” upon what to expect once she finally is able to transform
this is why her transformation looks so similar to the other girls.

as for why stella’s/flora’s/musa’s/etc. looks the way it does is a bit more difficult to pinpoint. it might be because they were taught from a young age how fairies can/are supposed to look
or they might also have known what alfea fairies looked like for the most part before transforming for the first time. either way, it’s likely they also based their outfits on some preconceived notion on how they imagine fairies should look.
we do see two other base level transformation, and it’s one that deviates from the basic outfit that we know and love, i will begin with diaspro’s. her outfit is very different. it isn’t all one colour, nor is it sparkly, and her wings are wildly different, too.
she obviously doesn’t go to alfea, so it’s likely she got a different image of a typical fairy. i also believe that your personality and your own preferences play a huge part in how your transformation looks which is what makes the outfits fit the girls’ personalities so well
and it is also what makes diaspro’s outfit look so similar to her royal get-up. she obviously likes her outfit and also thinks highly of herself and her position in eraklyon’s royal household.
the next person who’s base level deviates from the norm is, of course, roxy. her sequence is set to the believix song, which doesn’t mean much to me. i think that’s mostly convenience and simplicity for the viewers. i still think it’s a base level transformation
she hasn’t met any fairies before meeting the winx, and she hasn’t seen transformations, least of all base levels. she’s seen enchantix, but also believix, and her own transformation then molds itself after believix (which isn’t weird since she probably sees enchantix as weaker)
hence why she gets this simplified version of believix (idk if it’s simplified, but that’s the vibe i’ve always gotten?)
some have speculated that she’s somehow skipped base level, charmix & enchantix, but i HIGHLY doubt that.
this theory can also be expanded on to the higher levels of fairy forms. the basic shapes and ideas are perhaps based on the deity the form was gifted from/based on, or a concept, like the sleeves of the enchantix, the ”mermaid’s tail” of harmonix and the ribbons of sirenix, etc.
but the colours and themes are taken from the girl’s personality, style and preferences, which is why the girls’ outfits are often themed around their powers or fave colours or key ”traits” (flora=nature, tecna=technology, musa=east asian/music, etc.)
this is just a theory, but whenever i redesign/draw a transformation for one of the winx i think i’m gonna keep this in mind, and i just find it quite interesting. anyway, have a nice day and hope y’all enjoyed this thread!!!
