currently thinking about how its straight unreal how a faulty computational metaphor for how the brain works (as a serial processor that uses logical rules to manipulate symbols) still totally dominates mainstream linguistics
to my knowledge, literally every single field in cognitive science has moved on from this sort of thinking except mainstream/generative linguistics.
its like having a long and storied history in addition to a figurehead who will foolishly never budge on his super-outdated computational metaphors (i.e., chomsky) suffices to keep the "theory" or whatever it is of generative linguistics alive lol
(low key completely hopeless that linguistics will ever get out of this sort of thinking about the structure/function of the brain.)
tfw when ur computational metaphors are bankrupt & u need to scramble for reasoning: "children come equipped with a priori knowledge of language. . . because it is *unimaginable* [my emph] how they could otherwise acquire the complexities of...language" https://ucd.ie/artspgs/research/lasnik.pdf
to summarize: my brain dont work good enough to imagine other possibilities. therefore, this must be it. 🤡
